Colby the Christian Robot...?

I don't know if I am more frustrated, confused, or freaked out after watching this video:

Did anyone encounter Colby the Christian Robot in their childhood? I am eternally grateful that I did not. I came across an article by a man who was scarred for life by his experience.

I actually watched this movie several times as a kid at a youth group or two. I hadn't thought about it in 20 years.

Did you read the article? What are your thoughts today?

Did people back in the day actually talk bluntly about "programming" kids to be Christian through only exposing them to Christian culture?

I also found the line about being friends with a computer interesting - in this day of Internet/Gaming addictions.

What if someone actually got saved by watching this? If it has taken part in such a great work then I can't say anything except: not my style.

Dan, my question is, is the Gospel even in there?

All I can say is WOW! I mean, I watched Davey and Goliath, but I've never seen Colby, nor could I even finish this clip. I struggle with stuff like this.
If you've watched Jesus Camp, there are some similar themes that came up for me that you are raising. How do we raise children in the gospel without it coming across as brainwashing? Do young decisions for Christ really carry any weight? I've been wrestling with this with my kids.
PS It seems like a vague ripoff of Kids Incorporated.

Thanks for sharing Howie.

I don't know if there is any benefit in such musings, but I wonder if this would have been more ammunition in my belt when I was really disillusioned and discontent with Christianity. It seems like I was just about at the point of snapping when God gathered me up, in all of my brokenness, in His embrace. If I had seen this as a child, I very well might have snapped at least 6 month to a year earlier.
